Mitsubishi has been riding a wave of success lately, and the Japanese automaker even achieved record sales in Canada in 2024 for certain models. The brand was ahead of its time in many ways, and now that the market has adjusted, Mitsubishi models are shining brightly—especially the Eclipse Cross. When it debuted in 2018, the Japanese SUV showcased a concept that was too forward-thinking, with a drivetrain that stood out from the competition. Today, everyone has adopted a similar formula, yet the Eclipse Cross has retained its unique charm. In fact, it's fresher than ever.

For 2025, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross gets a mild facelift with a redesigned front end and a slightly reworked rear. Rear seatbelt alerts are now standard, and some trims have seen an upgrade in equipment.

Trims and Pricing

Good news for buyers: the price of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross remains essentially unchanged for 2025. It starts with the ES S-AWC trim at $29,398. This version offers decent standard equipment, such as 18-inch wheels and automatic climate control—features that are often optional with competitors. Next up is the SE S-AWC trim at $32,898, adding options like a heated steering wheel and a hands-free power liftgate. The SEL S-AWC trim raises the price to $35,698, introducing advanced tech and a more refined finish.

The Noir S-AWC trim is one of the most intriguing in the lineup, priced at $37,998. As its name suggests, it benefits from a blacked-out appearance package that makes the Eclipse Cross more stylish than ever. Finally, the GT S-AWC trim sits at the top of the range, starting at $38,498. This version includes a panoramic sunroof and premium leather seats.

Category and Competitors

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is one of those vehicles that straddles two categories. Technically, it can compete with many compact SUVs, even though it belongs to the subcompact SUV category. If that doesn't ring a bell for you, I don't know what will.

Competitors: Buick Envista, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Mitsubishi RVR, Nissan Kicks, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Corolla Cross, Volkswagen Taos.

Design and Technology

From the start, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was ahead of its time when it debuted in 2018. Today, while it blends better into the crowd, it still stands out in its own way. It's a model with a lot of personality and charisma, capable of drawing you in with its design alone.

The interior, however, warrants a more critical eye. The design could use a modern update, and the material quality is subpar in some areas. Thankfully, the Japanese SUV redeems itself with a well-thought-out layout. The ergonomics are well-studied, the seats are comfortable, and it's surprisingly spacious. While Mitsubishi's infotainment system isn't the most advanced on the market, it's functional and user-friendly.

Performance

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers just one mechanical configuration, and honestly, that's perfectly fine. The Japanese SUV is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers 152 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a CVT, and all-wheel drive comes standard. While towing isn't recommended for most subcompact SUVs, the Eclipse Cross can handle up to 2,000 pounds in certain situations.

Weaknesses

  • Interior finish quality is lacking in some areas.
  • No sporty or electric versions are available.

Strengths

  • A head-turning design.
  • Comprehensive standard equipment and excellent value for money.
  • An especially effective all-wheel-drive system.

Signature Element

The Eclipse Cross initially raised doubts, but today it has proven its worth in the market with its standout design.

Final Thoughts

Mitsubishi's Japanese SUV has gained significant popularity in recent years. I believe it's time for the brand to take a step forward and expand its lineup with new features. Still, the model is already impressive in its current form and certainly deserves consideration.
