In fewer words, Super All-Wheel Control can best be described as Mitsubishi's proprietary handling system that provides enhanced vehicle control in a variety of conditions. Although the system's purpose remains the same, the way in which it's incorporated into the three vehicles can vary. In the following piece, we will break down just how AWC functions in each of the models.

 

Unlike conventional All-Wheel Drive systems, like those available on the Honda CR-V or the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi's Super All Wheel Control uses real drive axles and not hydraulic pumps to transfer power when the going gets tough. The Honda and Toyota AWD systems should be more properly named as 2-wheel assist systems and not AWD systems.

 

Honda CR-V all-wheel drive disadvantages vs Mitsubishi's S-AWC

 

  • The Honda CR-V system cannot manually lock the front and rear axles, when the vehicle is in a difficult situation.
  • The Honda CR-V system has no center differential.
  • The Honda CR-V system does not offer torque vectoring.

 

Toyota RAV4 disadvantages vs Mitsubishi's S-AWC

 

  • The Toyota system has a lock system for the front and rear axles, but it disengages after 25 km/hour.
  • The Toyota RAV4 system has no center differential.
  • The Toyota RAV4 system does not offer torque vectoring.

 

Mitsubishi's Super All-wheel Control systems offer center differentials, AWD lock modes and torque vectoring, i.e. the ability to vary engine torque to each wheel, with the system continuously optimizing AWD performance, according to the conditions.

Moving up to the S-AWC system used in the Outlander GT adds Active Front Differential (AFD) and Active Yaw Control (AYC), which control the brakes and power steering to regulate torque split between the left and right wheels. This results in further enhancement in the vehicle's ability to accurately maintain the chosen line through corners, straight-line driving, lane-changing manoeuvres, and maintaining traction and control on slippery surfaces.
